Dr. Jennifer Sumner is the 2022 recipient of the American Psychosomatic Society’s Herbert Weiner Early Career Award. This award recognizes individuals who, early in their career, have contributed significantly to the field of psychosomatic science.
Dr. Sumner receives an R01 grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to examine how mental health after trauma may relate to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Along with her Co-PI, Dr. Jaimie Gradus, she will utilize a prospective, population-based registry cohort of over 1 million trauma-exposed individuals to identify the manifestations of posttraumatic psychopathology most associated with CVD onset in a national sample of Danish men and women. These findings will be used to inform the development of targeted CVD prevention efforts in trauma-exposed populations.

Jordan was awarded the Elizabeth Blackwell, MD, Graduate Award from the UCLA Center for the Study of Women for her amazing research on women’s health. This award recognizes an outstanding research report, master’s thesis, dissertation, or published article related to women and health or women in health-related endeavors.
Graduate student, Jordan Thomas, has been awarded the APF 2021 Henry David Research Grant in order to fund her research endeavors. This grant supports research in behavioral aspects of population studies or human reproductive behavior.
